About the job
Asana is a leading platform for human + AI collaboration, helping millions of teams achieve their goals. We are looking for an Engineering Manager to lead the Agent Context team in NYC, which owns how Asana's AI systems search, retrieve, and reason over the work graph.
Responsibilities
- Own the technical direction and delivery of Asana's retrieval stack end to end: lexical and semantic search, dense embedding generation and backfill, chunking and ranking strategies, and RAG comprehensiveness.
- Build and operate evaluation infrastructure for retrieval quality, including recall/precision benchmarks, offline and online evals, and comparative testing.
- Drive cost, performance, and quality tradeoffs, including when semantic search earns its infrastructure cost and how to hit latency targets without sacrificing recall.
- Set and enforce integration standards for other teams, including embedding decisions, rollout guidance, and metrics.
- Hire, grow, and retain a team of senior engineers in NYC, and lead effectively across three time zones with async communication.
- Partner with a Product Manager to translate a multi-year platform thesis into a sequenced roadmap.
Qualifications
- 8+ years of software engineering experience with 3+ years managing engineers on infrastructure or ML systems teams.
- Shipped and operated production search, retrieval, or ML-serving systems at scale.
- Deep knowledge of the modern retrieval stack: inverted indexes, BM25, vector search, embedding models, hybrid retrieval, chunking, re-ranking.
- Experience building or using evaluation systems for ML/AI quality, including golden datasets, recall/precision metrics, LLM-as-judge, and online experimentation.
- Technically credible to review design docs for embedding backfills or OpenSearch mapping changes.
- Experience leading distributed teams across time zones with strong written communication.
- Experience with LLM-powered products, agent systems, or RAG pipelines in production is strongly preferred.
Compensation
Estimated base salary range: $264,000 - $300,000. Additional components may include equity and benefits.
Benefits
- Mental health, wellness & fitness benefits
- Career coaching & support
- Inclusive family building benefits
- Long-term savings or retirement plans
- In-office culinary options
