Staff Software Engineer, Backend (Communications Platform)

Squarespace is a design-driven platform helping entrepreneurs build brands and businesses online, with products including websites, domains, ecommerce, and marketing tools. The Communications Platform team is critical for customer engagement, sending over 1.75 million notifications per day via email, push, and in-product messaging.

As a Staff Software Engineer, you will lead the technical direction of the Communications Platform, driving architecture, roadmap execution, and engineering quality. This is a hands-on role with broad cross-functional influence, reporting to the Engineering Manager.

• Drive architecture, design, and implementation of email delivery, in-product notifications, and push notifications.
• Define technical strategy for platform modernization, reliability, and engineering standards.
• Provide technical leadership and mentorship to backend and frontend engineers.
• Write high-quality Java code, lead design and code reviews.
• Identify and address systemic risks in performance, reliability, security, and operability.
• Partner on cross-team architecture initiatives.

• 10+ years of backend engineering experience with large-scale customer-facing systems.
• Deep expertise in Java, backend services, APIs, async processing, messaging (Kafka), and data stores (MongoDB, CockroachDB).
• Strong experience with distributed systems in production.
• Proven technical leadership at Staff or Senior-plus level.
• Experience modernizing legacy platforms.
• Experience in platform engineering contexts.
• Understanding of multi-channel communication infrastructure is a plus.

Compensation: Cash Compensation Range: $185,500 - $299,000 USD, plus equity.
