Staff Software Engineer, Backend (Lake Analytics Platform)

Affirm is a fintech company reinventing credit to be more honest and friendly, offering buy now, pay later services without hidden fees. The Data and Storage Services team builds large-scale data infrastructure across OLTP and OLAP systems, including the Lakehouse Platform based on Apache Iceberg, Spark, and Snowflake.

• Define and drive the technical roadmap for the Lakehouse Platform, balancing scalability, reliability, governance, performance, and cost.
• Architect and implement secure, discoverable analytical data capabilities, including RBAC, data masking, cataloging, lineage, and privacy enforcement.
• Partner with Analytics Engineering to improve data modeling, transformation pipelines, testing, and data quality.
• Establish best practices for lakehouse operations, including schema evolution, partitioning, compaction, observability, and incident response.
• Optimize compute and storage performance and cost, including Snowflake tuning and query optimization.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams and mentor engineers.

• 8+ years in software engineering, data infrastructure, or data platform engineering, with 2+ years of technical leadership.
• Hands-on experience with Apache Iceberg, Spark, Snowflake, and cloud-native data lake architectures.
• Experience with dbt or similar transformation frameworks, including data modeling, testing, and CI/CD.
• Proficiency in Python, SQL, or JVM-based languages.
• Familiarity with Terraform or similar infrastructure-as-code tools.

Base pay ranges: $230,000 - $290,000 for CA, WA, NY, NJ, CT; $204,000 - $264,000 for all other U.S. states. Total compensation may include equity rewards, monthly stipends, and benefits including 100% subsidized medical, dental, and vision coverage.
