Product Design Manager, Payroll

Gusto is on a mission to grow the small business economy, handling payroll, health insurance, 401(k)s, and HR for over 500,000 small businesses nationwide. The company has teams in Denver, San Francisco, and New York.

As the Product Design Manager for Payroll, you will lead design for one of Gusto's most complex product areas. You'll manage a team of designers, set UX direction, and partner with Product, Engineering, Research, Data, Ops, Compliance, and others. Responsibilities include leading end-to-end design, defining long-term UX vision, leading AI and automation initiatives, mentoring designers, and setting quality standards for AI-assisted design work.

• 8–10+ years of product design experience, with at least 3 years leading design teams.
• Experience in complex domains (financial products, healthcare, regulated environments).
• Experience setting UX direction across multiple teams and influencing product strategy.
• Experience leading product initiatives where AI or automation is central.
• Ability to assess AI-generated design directions.
• Deep systems thinking and ability to simplify complex workflows.
• Experience leading a team through an AI workflow transition.
• Clear communication and storytelling skills.

Cash compensation range is $172,000/yr to $215,000/yr in Denver & most remote locations, and $202,000/yr to $253,000/yr in San Francisco, Seattle & New York. Final offers vary based on experience and expertise.
