Role Overview

This Senior Software Engineer role focuses on improving backend systems that power a seamless user journey, enhancing content discoverability and purchase processes. The engineer will lead efforts to develop robust backend architectures supporting advanced recommendation and personalization systems, collaborating closely with ML engineers, product teams, and data scientists.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and maintain high-quality backend applications.
  • Lead the development of the backend system's roadmap, prioritizing scalability and reliability.
  • Innovate and develop new features that enhance customer shopping experiences.
  • Own and lead major components of the product, ensuring they meet internal and external standards.
  • Collaborate across teams to foster a unified approach to product development.
  • Oversee strategic planning and execution of projects from inception to deployment and maintenance.

Qualifications

Minimum

  • 5+ years of backend development experience with a strong record of project delivery.
  • Proficiency in backend languages such as Ruby or Go.
  • Solid foundation in unit testing and problem-solving.
  • Exceptional communication skills and ability to lead and collaborate with diverse teams.
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent experience.

Preferred

  • Experience leading cross-functional teams and fostering alignment.
  • Experience building scalable solutions and architecture.
  • Familiarity with ML model development and iteration.
  • Thorough knowledge of developing applications using GraphQL.
  • Skilled in monitoring and observability tools like Datadog.
  • Extensive experience with PostgreSQL and AWS OpenSearch.

Compensation & Benefits

Base pay range for Canadian candidates: CAN$168,000—$177,500 CAD. This role is eligible for a new hire equity grant as well as annual refresh grants. Instacart provides highly market-competitive compensation and benefits.
